Clear Your Coal Consignments Without Customs Delays
Avoid expensive port demurrage and ensure seamless customs clearance for your coal shipments. Under the Foreign Trade Policy administered by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), registering under the Coal Import Monitoring System (CHIMS) is a strict mandatory requirement for importing all major categories of coal into India—including Anthracite, Bituminous, Coking, and Steam Coal. Importers must secure a Unique Registration Number (URN) well in advance of the shipment’s arrival at Indian sea ports. Starting at just ₹1,499/-, SetCorpTax manages your complete end-to-end CHIMS filing—ensuring your import documentation is approved on the DGFT system without errors or logistical halts.
Understanding India's Coal Import Framework
Securing a chims registration online is a critical operational mandate for industrial buyers, energy producers, steel manufacturers, and coal trading companies across India. Introduced by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry in coordination with the Ministry of Coal, CHIMS requires importers to submit advance shipment details prior to cargo arrival.
Upon successful submission, the system generates a Unique Registration Number (URN), which must be explicitly quoted on the Bill of Entry filed with Indian Customs. The CHIMS registration remains valid for a specific validity window, allowing importers to clear their registered quantities smoothly across customs ports. Our specialized trade team handles your complete data preparation, HS code classification, and DGFT portal mapping to ensure your URN is generated rapidly and accurately.
Why Importers Rely On Our CHIMS Services
Precise HS Code Mapping
Misclassifying coal categories (e.g., Coking vs. Non-Coking Bituminous Coal) can cause customs delays. We verify your technical specifications to ensure exact HS code alignment on the portal.
Rapid URN Generation
Time is critical when cargo vessels are at sea. Our trade team drafts and submits your CHIMS file within hours to ensure your URN is generated well before your vessel docks.
100% Transparent Pricing
No surprise agency retainers, hidden handling charges, or unquoted portal submission fees. Secure your coal import clearance anywhere in India for a single, flat rate.

Frequently Asked Questions Regarding CHIMS Registration
The Coal Import Monitoring System (CHIMS) is an advance information gathering mechanism managed by the DGFT and the Ministry of Coal. It requires coal importers to submit detailed advance information about incoming shipments. It is mandatory because Indian Customs will not clear coal consignments or process the Bill of Entry unless a valid CHIMS Unique Registration Number (URN) is provided.
As per DGFT guidelines, importers must apply for CHIMS registration on or after the 15th day prior to the expected date of arrival of the shipment, and no later than the date of arrival of the cargo at the Indian port. Securing your URN well before vessel docking prevents port delays.
A CHIMS URN generated on the DGFT portal remains valid for a period of 75 days from the date of issuance. The registered coal consignment must arrive at the Indian port and be processed through customs within this 75-day validity window.
To complete your filing, you need to provide:
Active Import Export Code (IEC) and Class 3 Digital Signature Certificate (DSC).
Specific ITC (HS) Code of the coal being imported (e.g., 27011100, 27011200).
Country of Origin, Port of Export, and intended Indian Port of Discharge.
Expected Date of Arrival, Total Quantity (in Metric Tons), and Total CIF Value.
Commercial Invoice and Bill of Lading / Vessel details.
